Columbian campaign kicks off
July 2005: More than 300 children from the municipality of Suárez, Cauca, attended the launch of Columbia's Universal Birth Registration (UBR) campaign in Cauca, west Colombia. The campaign aims to register more than 7,000 children in the municipalities of Suárez, Padilla, Buenos Aires and Jamundí.

Ghana commits to full registration
June 2005: Ghana is aiming to have 100% birth registration of all children by 2010. Ghana was the first country in Africa to ratify the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) and yet more than a decade later only 28 per cent on children were registered in the country (based on 2003 figures).

20,000 Belgians support the UBR Campaign
More than 20,000 people signed a petition in support of universal birth registration as part of a Universal Birth Registration (UBR) action week in Belgium. This was the culmination of a hugely successful and hectic week of activities for the campaign in Belgium.

21 Motorcycles to help register births in Uganda
June 2005: The Luwero District in Uganda has received 21 motorcycles as part of its campaign for birth registration. As well as the motorcycles for the district, Plan gave each village a bicycle to help ease the movement for those working on making the birth and death registration process a success in Luwero.

Pushing for a changes to the law in Malawi
June 2005: 90 per cent of Malawian children are not registered due to Birth registration not being compulsory. The campaign for Universal Brith Registration is working to change this, starting with the need to introduce a new law to replace the out dated 1904 Act as this piece of colonial legislation only applies to white settles and Asians living in Malawi.

El Salvador's First Lady supports the campaign
May 2005: On 26th May, the Universal Birth Registration (UBR) campaign was launched by El Salvador's by the First Lady, Mrs Ana Ligia de Saca. The campaign was supported by the First Lady, Mrs Ana Ligia de Saca. Under her guidance a commitment was to promote and deliver the registration of the children in the Republic of El Salvador.

One in eight children trafficked in Togo, West Africa For the price of a bike, Plan's new report published to mark International Day of Missing Children on 25 May, says that it is estimated that 12 percent of children in Togo, West Africa are being removed from their homes in rural areas and sent to work for little or no pay. |

Plan asks European Commission about Universal Birth Registration
Plan Europe submitted a Parliamentary Question to the European Union’s Commission on the inclusion of UBR in their policies. The purpose of the question was to force the Commission to consider what it is doing on UBR.

The Prime Minister of Norway commits to fighting for birth registration
May 2005: Norway's Prime Minister, Mr Kjell Magne Bondevik has pledged to support the Universal Birth Registration (UBR) campaign. During the promotion visit, Mr Bondevik said he appreciated the initiative to secure birth registration of children.

Denied an education
Eighteen year old Awawou from Togo has spent her life longing for an education. Growing up without a birth certificate meant that she was not able to progress through school. Awawou worked hard to earn enough money to pay for her birth certificate and returned to school. However, being in a class full of young children and not fitting in left Awawou with a new set of problems.

Street children in Vietnam demand access to school
Duong has been attending evening-classes for street children since she was eight years old. She cannot go to school because she does not have a birth certificate. Doung and 600 street and working children will visit the Children's Palace in Hanoi, Vietnam with life-size cardboard cut-outs of children to represent themselves and other children who do not go to school. The children will be asking officials for the opportunity to attend school.

Over 2 million Cambodians receive birth registration documents
Feb 2005: Over 2 milion Cambodians have been issued their birth certificates during the last three months of 2004, said Prum Sokha, Secretary of State, Ministry of Interior, speaking at a press conference on the results achieved during the first three months of mobile civil registration campaign.
